HEHS Alumni Student Visit to Year 12
Posted on: 18/12/2023We were privileged to have former Hatch End High School student, Thiviyuhan, visit us and share his experience of studying A-Levels at Hatch End High School. Having achieved exceptional grades, he has progressed in Further Education, studying Medicine at Cambridge University.
Some of the insights shared included keeping all options open, applying to universities within reach of predicted grades and having an interest in the course you are studying. He spoke about his perseverance and determination to secure a place at a reputable Russell Group University. Furthermore, he studied Biology, Chemistry and Maths at A Level, resulting in 4 A grades.
Becoming financially aware and preparing for university costs was another aspect that was covered. He also shared his approach and strategy for funding the degree. In Year 12 he had decided to drop Physics however, he found to study Medicine at University, Physics was required. In Year 13, Thiviyuhan resumed his Physics A Level, which then allowed him to secure to A* in Physics to enable him to go on to the degree and university where he wanted to study.
Additionally, Cambridge had offered Thiviyuhan an interview, he prepared for the interview by speaking and engaging with teachers who had previously studied at Cambridge University. He used various resources to expand his knowledge and interview technique.
Finally, Thiviyuhan emphasised Cambridge’s biggest focus being academic results and searching for the most determined students to study at the University. Thiviyuhan was very inspirational and determined to embark on a new journey having completed his A Levels successfully. HEHS Year 12 students took on board the advice given by him. We were thoroughly inspired by his persistence, attitude towards his learning and how he has set himself up for the future. One of the key takeaways, personally, was if you are determined to reach a specific target or goal, you should keep trying and never give up.
